At almost 9:00 p.m., Christian sat flipping aimlessly through the cable channels in the living room when the front door opened, signaling that Rayne was finally home. Lowering the volume on the television, he listened intently as she thanked Hawkings for everything, heard him tell her it was his pleasure, and then noted the telltale quiet that indicated that Ethan had kissed her good night. Christian’s hand tightened around the remote in annoyance but he compelled his body to remain seated, even though the urge to rush to the door and deck the other man in his too-perfect face was excruciating.

Rayne seemed surprised to see him sitting in on the sofa when she finally came inside. Her brisk steps slowed considerably when she noticed him there but she quickly collected herself and continued walking. “Good night,” she said tightly, passing him on her way to the staircase.

“What happened to your car?” he asked quietly, shutting off the television and resting the remote beside him on the couch.

“It’s in the shop.” Her response was abrupt and dry. She kept on walking.

“Yeah, Travis told me. What happened to it?” Christian rose and followed her.

Rayne spun on her heels to glare at him. “Battery died, alternator busted…something! I don’t know, Stockwell, I’m not the expert.” Her voice was rich with derision.

Folding his arms across his chest he stared back at her, wondering what her problem was. “If you needed a ride home you could’ve called me.”

Rayne rolled her eyes. “Oh please, Christian. What exactly would I have called you on? I don’t even have a damn number for you.” She made to walk away again but his hand shot out to grip her arm, preventing her departure.

“Fair enough, we’ll have to rectify that. I bought tacos, are you hungry or did lover boy feed you?”

Her mouth fell open briefly in exasperation before she bit out tartly, “Not that it’s any of your concern but no, I’m not hungry. I ate.”

Christian narrowed his eyes, perplexed by her hostile attitude. He knew they had some shit to work out but this behavior was totally unexpected. “Care to tell me what’s got your panties all twisted up?”

She gawked at him, flabbergasted by his question. “Seriously, Stockwell? Are you kidding me right now? You know what, screw you!”

She turned and bounded up the staircase, making it to the landing in the hallway before he caught up with her. Grabbing her wrist, he spun her around to face him, pushing her up against the wall and pressing his body on hers forcefully to keep her there. Her bag fell from her shoulder and she flattened both palms on his chest, fighting pointlessly to push him off. At the touch of her hands, desire punched him in the gut hard and swift, and he could feel his cock begin to swell in his pants.
